Robert Revere - Analog Artist

Photographer working in both the darkroom (i.e. traditional black and white) and non-silver processes, such as gum bichromate.

Currently, my work explores both landscape photography and the built environment, the latter in a pre- nostalgic way. My landscapes start with the “taking” of a picture, but some of the images are then manipulated in the printing process to add a layer of distance between the scene and the viewer, creating space for conjecture and imagination.

In the urban environment, I use the term pre-nostalgic as I focus the camera on mundane scenes, unfashionable areas, and the uneconomically interesting. These are the elements of the urban scene that will disappear, without being remarked on, as cities evolve to stay relevant. I look at non-urban landscapes for the scars that we have left on the natural environment.

I studied photography at the Corcoran School of Art and the Art Institute of Boston, where I began using on-silver techniques in addition to straight black and white (“analog”) photography.

I have exhibited my work in group shows in Boston and Washington, DC, including exhibits at the Spectrum Gallery, Touchstone Gallery (where I later served as director), and the Art League Gallery. I taught photography at the Maryland College of Art and Design and served on the board of directors of Washington Center for Photography.

My artistic biography might have ended with the purchase of a digital camera. Digital seemed a more convenient medium after when I joined the Peace Corps, serving for two years assisting artists and artisans in Morocco. As I experimented with digital images, and reflected on the photographs of other artists, I found myself craving the depth and tactile experience of a print. With the purchase of an enlarger, I returned to the darkroom in 2015, and in 2018 I was invited to take part in a residency at Burren College of Art, in Ballyvaughan, County Clare, Ireland.
